Catch the latest with Barry Mckay......

May 9th,2008

I was going to have pics uploaded today to this blog BUT 4 people in one house and just one digital camera! So someone has the family camera. I hope to get it back, get some pics and get them up. Tomorrow there will be a major move forward afer some heavy duty sanding (Jill are you reading this?LOL) and painting. My hands are finally healing up after the brutal mess I put them thru called the shower door (pic coming). I only had to take it down twice to get it right. I've had some things come in that are important and I promised I would post and put on my blog so here you go...
.......
Hello, This is Meghan McBee and Ashley Bevins and we were wondering if you could help to get people to come to Bravos Frozen Custard on Rosemont Road in Virginia Beach to help us raise money for Relay for Life. It is from 2:45 to 6:00 on May 18,2008. We would greatly appreciate your help in getting people to come to Bravos and support a good cause and have fun and eat ice cream and listen to music. Thank You for Your Help Meghan McBee Ashley Bevins

Hello, my name is Sarah Lutman and I am a bartender at LoneStar Steakhouse and Saloon in Virginia Beach. I just wanted to tell you about my friend Gary Holohan. He is a 23 year old college student and works at LoneStar as well. He recently was experiencing terrible headaches and went to the hospital last friday and found out that he had a brain tumor. This guy is one of the sweetest and generous people that I know. He had emergency surgery at Sentara Norfolk General on Saturday and thankfully they got all the tumor and is expected to recover. He is not out of the woods yet, and we expect to know the results on whether or not it is cancer wednesday or thursday. The that I am trying to make is that Gary did not have health insurance. We are thinking of many ways as to how we can raise money for him. Right now we are collecting money at LoneStar Steakhouse and Saloon, and we have posting things at work, as well as myspace, facebook, anything that we can get the word out that we are collecting donations. I was wondering if at all possible that you can make an announcement on air or post a bulletin or something, anything to kind of help us get the word out even more. Even if no one comes to donate, at least maybe if they hear about it they can pray for him...which honestly we need more than donations. And it can even raise awareness on the importance of getting health insurance. If you can not make an announcement, thank you so much for your time : ) Have a wonderful day. Sincerely, Sarah Lutman 7576367379

….I didn’t have much time to work on the project last night. The shower door has thrown me a bit. I had issue with the bottom rail that had sharp edges on it and would not ‘set’ properly into the curved section of the tub area. I went ahead and drilled out the holes and put the strike side and pivot sides on the tub walls thinking that I could make up the quarter inch at the top…..I was wrong. THEN I read the directions about filing down the sharp edges to curve into the bottom of the shower stall. Uh, this was on page 11 of the directions..(Hello, Kohler doors? You might want to mention that on the first page of the freakin’ directions!!!) So I took the rails down, filed the edges to fit snugly and re-drilled my holes for the screws. It was 10:43pm so I decided to clean up and go to sleep. Now tonight I should be able to finish the shower door and proceed onto sanding the walls. I’ll have some shots of door for you tomorrow but here are some more shots of the bathroom before the make over. Keep in mind we are keeping this under a thousand bucks. I don’t know how those shows on TV do all they do for under a grand but things added up pretty fast when Jill and I were at Home Depot buying materials. A big thanks to George at Home Depot for being super kind and helpful! (a rarity!) Here are some more shots of the room before we started…..

Hey my towelrack!

...this shower door has got to go and it did...( I threw it away in the station dumpster...shhhhhh)

Jill has a great idea on how to handle this huge mirror behind the bath. Please note the quality of the builders above the bath spigot...yes, thats drywall showing through! Just how tipsy were the guys who built this house huh?

OK, more tomorrow, some pics of the current work. This is mesmerizing isn't it? You can't wait 'til tomorrow, you won't sleep tonight!!!

Hey thanks for the time and I'll see you on the radio.

Howdy! Did you have a fun weekend? I took on (and am taking on) a bathroom makeover! This is our master bathroom and we have put it off until now because the rest of the house was in chaos. We bought in June of 2005 when the market was so hot, you brought a briefcase full of cash with you! And forget the inspection! So we found a house that was ‘available’ and I don’t think the previous 2 owners ever touched up the paint or did any maintenance on the place. But here are a couple shots of the bathroom (this is really interesting isn’t ?)

I love the total mirror look of this room..so 1997..LOL. And the angle of this wall is nice too. Great design….

Another shot…

This is an enclosure over the toilet…it will have shelves built in with an outlet behind it for the Radio! Gotta have the radio right?!

Tonight I am going to finish putting in the shower door. Right now it is kicking my butt…I’m sick of ready “do not cut the pivot end”…’Hey Manufacturer…I got your pivot right here.’ Wish me luck…I know just enough to be dangerous.

Oh, and here is a my GFI outlet…ooooooooh.

Friday May 2! 2008

I am cool with it being Friday! Hey a big shout out to my mechanic Jimmy at Car Services for throwing on some new shocks on my Jeep. It is riding sooo smooth now. Thanks Jimmy! Always a great job. I finally have some shots from my live broadcast from the Pepsi Broadcast Booth at Busch Gardens. Thanks to Jennifer and Glenda and Roxanne for all the help!

--thanks to my girl Jilly for taking the shots...nice work girl!

---I'd like to apologize to Pepsi for blocking their sign with my big head...oops!

and here are my chicken legs making their 2008 debut! nice...hello..tanning bed anyone?

Have a great weekend. Jill and I are taking on a makeover of our master bathroom. This is the last room in our house that we need to re-do. I'll have some shots for you next week....thanks again for checking out my blog and thanks for listening to me on the Point! Pick your pump! Reach out to me with any comments or questions...

“Halo” Effect of healthy food - not so Holy?

The Diet Blog is a great site that we frequent because they often have great information on foods and healthy diets. They recently did a nice piece focusing on a study that’s titled “Biasing Health Halos of Fast Food Restaurant Health Claims“.  Basically what this study reports is that when people are dining on food that they believe to be healthier for them, they underestimate calories and consume more than they should as a result. For the full story, link on the Diet Blog link above, some key points are:
1. Underestimation
The research shows that people underestimate calories in Subway much more so than that of McDonald’s.
The researchers in this study asked people eating a sandwich, soft drink, and a side order from Subway or from McDonald’s how many calories they thought those meals contained.  The Subway diners thought their meal had 151 calories less than it actually had — a 21% underestimation. The meals actually had the same number of calories.
2. Higher Calorie Side Orders
Consumers were handed coupons for a Subway 12-inch Italian BMT sandwich and a McDonald’s Big Mac. Then, when asked what they wanted with their sandwich, the Subway diners were more likely to pick a high-calorie side order. Ironically, the Big Mac has two-thirds the calories of the Sub!
3. Healthy By Association
Researchers set up two menus from two fake restaurants. One menu had “healthier” fare, while the other had not so healthy items on the menu.
When students were given a sandwich and drink - labeled with one or other fake restaurant names - they automatically assumed the one with the healthy restaurant label had fewer calories. The sandwich and drink were identical (only the labels were different).
Conclusion
This shows how easily we as consumers are fooled by branding. Choose wisely.

I’ll yak at you tomorrow!

So it’s Earth Day. Are you recycling? I lived in Seattle for 4 years in a little town (at the time) called Issaquah. I worked on the radio at 92.5 KLSY. They are very serious about recycling in the Northwest. We had to separate our garbage into glass (clear only), cans, and paper. And let me tell you, they wouldn’t take a greasy pizza box..oh no, the ‘trash’ had to be clean. And on top of that I had to pay each month to recycle. Even if I didn’t recycle, I still had to pay. So Jill and I would have to wash the glass and metal before we could put it out curbside. Isn’t that wasting water? Hmmmm. Well anyway, I didn’t mean for this to be a rant. Happy Earth Day!

STRESS RELIEF!!!
We’ve long suspected that stress can cause or aggravate high blood pressure, but this study is the first to explain how it might work. And it highlights how important it is for men (and especially black men) to do what they can to reduce the stress in their lives. It’s not easy, but here are a few tips that can help:
·         Get up 15 minutes earlier in the morning to reduce the rush.
·         Stick to the right lane on the freeway. The minute or two gained by aggressive driving isn’t worth the stress.
·         Take some time each day to review long-term plans. Stress lies in the moment-by-moment pressures.
·         Breathe in and out four times very slowly when you feel the stress piling up.
·         Take a walk at lunch time. Exercising and getting away from the office can work wonders.
·         Volunteer. Doing things for others pushes your own troubles out of the limelight.
·         Save time for yourself. Do something totally indulgent-take a nap, for example-at least once a week.
…good stuff..and remember, if you have anything going on, this is your neighborhood blog! Here is info about the Deep Creek High School! Hey, what is your mascot anyway??
"Deep Creek High Class of '78 is looking for alumni for their 30-year class reunion to be held on October 17-19, 2008.  Alumni are asked to update their addresses and phone numbers at (www.deepcreek78.com) or contact Cynthia (Holloway) Roseman @839-3461 or Deborah (Holland) Harris @681-3662 or Shelby (Ward) Quamiley @ 295-1494."

And here’s a shot of me with Jason Mraz…great show and you all were a great crowd. The Norva is the coolest!..

Monday 4/21/08

Well here we go, another great week! If you missed the Jason Mraz show, well, you missed a great show! Our own Chris Richardson joined Jason on stage for his song GEEK IN THE PINK! OMG! ..  thanks for our friends at the Norva for all their help in making this POINT presents show really great. And hi to Sarah, our server at Kellys Backstage Tavern. We went there for a bite to eat before the show..it was her first night and she spilled a trayful of drinks on our table...but the cool thing was that she spilled them in between everyone so no one got soaked! Sarah, you did a great job. Over the weekend I put out the mulch (isn't that really the best job ever...) Problem was my trees have brown mulch and the garden beds have black mulch! I think someone at Home Depot stacked black and brown mulch in the same pile. (phone sfx: hello is this customer service?) Please hold..lol.  OK, so you know I am into nutrition and energy drinks and looking better and feeling great and I came across this article on 8 tips on keeping the weight you've lost off. You can always email me with questions! bmckay@entercom.com .................,

Experts are beginning to recognize that there’s a big difference between losing weight and keeping it off. Anyone can go on a diet and lose weight, but the really difficult part is keeping it off.
Here’s a collection of tips compiled from the successes of people who have lost at least 30 pounds off and kept from regaining it for a year or more.
  1. Eat more fruits and vegetable - Weight maintainers report eating nearly 4 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Fruits and veggies are low in calories and high in water and fiber, both of which help keep hunger away. They also provide a beneficial array of nutrients good for everyone.
  2. Eat more fiber - High fiber foods such as beans, whole grain breads, and cereals, fruits and vegetables also help keep away hunger pangs.
  3. Watch your carbohydrate and fat intake - Monitor your intake of these major nutrient categories while keeping in mind the fact that there is no “right” combination in a person’s diet. The ultimate key is to keep calories low in whatever combination you choose.
  4. Eat breakfast every day - Eating breakfast kicks your metabolism into gear for the day, and is a necessary contributor to keeping calories burning around the clock.
  5. Monitor your weight - Remain vigilant in monitoring your weight every day. Keep logs of your weight, daily exercise and if possible measurements of percent body fat. Successful weight losers don’t take the chance to let those unwanted pounds creep back up on their waistlines again.
  6. Halt fast foods - People who eat fast foods regularly regain more lost weight than those who keep it off their daily plates. If you do indulge occasionally, choose carefully and avoid fried items.
  7. Stay active - Exercise regularly at a moderately high intensity (brisk walking, cycling, jogging etc.) every day. Weight maintainers burn about 2,000 calories every week in physical activity.
  8. Turn off that TV - More than 60% of people who have lost weight watch fewer than 10 hours of TV a week. (The national average is 28 hours). This practice allows more time for exercise and less time snacking of high calorie junk foods associated with TV watching.
